I kind of feel the same way in regards to Sue. She is a fun, quirky character but I never felt she should've been put in the position she is in now. It wasn't a natural progression or change for her character. Kind of forced to round out the grouping for Madarame's character. Otherwise I definitely enjoyed this volume despite that fact. I can overlook it because Genshiken has always been consistent enjoyment and I never felt like it dipped or jumped the shark in any way that other longer running mangas tend to suffer from.

I thoroughly enjoyed the original Genshiken. I find the Second Season only occasionally funny. Perhaps with its emphasis on yaoi, which is not my interest, I am not the target audience for the Second Season.

I was pretty intrigued by the harem premise at the start but the longer it's gone on the more I've felt it was padded and can't come to any satisfying conclusion. Madarame is far too indecisive a character to ever actually be in a relationship with any of the current candidates. The added barrier of Hato being a guy appeals to me in that Genshiken is making some effort to portray that complexity, but I also doubt that one of the series principle cast will suddenly realize he's bi and start dating all in the same time span.

I wish we'd get back to what made me love Genshiken in "season one," the emphasis on character interactions in this very self-deprecating subculture, and what it means to each of them. A bit of romance is welcome but I'm tired of this one treading water.

The thing I loved about the original series is that it was all about the club. The story covered four years of college in nine volumes, and as it progressed, older characters would graduate and be demoted to minor roles while new characters would appear to take their place. The nature of the club evolved over time. Some characters would take center stage for a while, but then they'd step aside for somebody else.

Second Season has none of that. The new series is almost as long as the original, but we're still in the first year, and the focus has been locked on Hato and Madarame the entire time. I want things to move on already -- let's get into Yoshitake and Yajima; let's bring in new characters; let's have Madarame grow up and stop hanging around his old club like a loser.

the harem element is what made me drop the series as it just felt a little ridiculous

he admits that part of his discomfort comes from the fact that he can't understand why anyone would want him, is equally charming.

Are there any meta jokes about sequels being much lesser than the original and lacking ideas?

Wait, did you just accuse foreigner Sue Hopkins of not being able to hold a conversation in Japanese? I love the character and I love the fact that she was the one who moved to Japan and not her friend who could actually speak the language.

I wasn't a fan of this part of the "Second season" not because it was a harem or because it went on too long but because Sue was set up as interested in Madarame not only in the SS prologue but near the end... no, actually, it was her first appearance.

He was interested in her eyes, she called him an idiot like any tsundere would. So what happened? Second season was taken over by fujoshi baiting. Like a parody of the kind of genre shift it was imitating due to its change in audience, only it was clunky because part of the audience were the other characters.

Wait a minute, I was never a fan of the Second season! Look at what you made me say! (Runs off in tears)

Baka! (Other person leaves in a huff)

I don't know what they see in you! (Third person... third person?... walks away in disgust)

It could work but as someone else said, Madarame shouldn't even be there in the first place. He should be the first one to leave.

I was enjoying Second Season for a while. I don't necessarily relate to yaoi fangirls and their love of the genre, but that's what made this storyline different and intriguing to me, and the new characters had their own charm.

Then the harem storyline started, which stopped being convincing as soon as it was starting. I'm not saying Madarame doesn't have his charm, but just like I could never understand why he crushed on Saki in the first place, I seriously couldn't believe all these girls would clamor for him anymore than he did--and when Keiko of all people joined the group, I called complete bull on it.

I seriously hope it resolves soon, but it's still Genshiken and I'll keep reading it through to the end regardless.

I absolutely adore Sue. the very idea of Sue. I think she adds a neat juxtaposition to the rest of the club and if anything the mystery of what she's about and how much she actually understands in regards to the language has always been a factor in my love for the character. But I also love those characters that are just insanely weird.

I don't really mind her being in the Madarame "harem" as it makes her more real. Just because she's been a certain way doesn't mean she doesn't have emotions and I could see her finding Madarame cute in the same way Angela does. However, she should not win the harem competition. Rame x Angela all the way.

But i have a feeling Madarame will choose no one it's just the way of the otaku style Madarame.

The harem is a bit too long in the tooth but I've enjoyed this as a critique on the Madarame love that was very present in the Genshiken fanbase.

Overall, I've enjoyed Second Season and even though I am not a yaoi fan. Genshiken has given a real look into the fujoshi lifestyle in the same way the original manga gave a look into the Otaku life without bias or criticism.

If anything Genshiken has always been an educational experience (in regards to a beginners style intro to a subculture) and continues to be even with it's parody of a harem manga currently.

Ah Sue. Sue is awesome, Sue is fierce, Sue...has played a bunch of Street Fighter II.
