What a wonderful review! You captured so much of what I love about this anime, thanks!

I just want to add (my personal thoughts) that Myamu has FANTASTIC character development. I realize you wrote this before Episode 13 was released, but I just watched Ep 13 and I have to say that Myamu’s development and her and Matsuri’s friendship really pays off here.

I like it but I loved it when it was just Ultra Maniac- just the "other girl from a magic world on her way to a being a magician teams up with a normal girl." The two guys, being watched by an elderly father figure from the other world, they didn't stop taking elements even when it didn't make much of a point.

What is unique to Waccha is the idol stuff and all the trappings that come with it- but all that does it weigh it down. It's good but seeing they took something great and diluted it with CGI dancing, I wouldn't say being merely good is a positive.

I actually decided to give the show a watch after reading this. I loved Pretty Rhythm but PriPara after I guess s1?(I watched it but didn't care for it) and the sequels of it and the following series just didn't appeal overall to me with the style so I didn't even give the new one a glancing look initially. Just finished up ep 6 and have really enjoyed it.

As someone who’s been with the series from the start I’m thankful that you’ve decided to stick to it even though based on your initial thoughts it wasn’t quite your thing.

As for my own thoughts, it’s intreating seeing the evolution the franchise had with how it’s pulled in so meany directions over the years and constantly reinventing itself. From sports drama (pretty rhythm) to absurdist comedy(pripara) to social media influencer slice of life to this which feels like a mid point of most of the ideas that came before. The execution is sloppier but the way it manages to pull it off is impressive to say the least. They tend to take a while episodes to really start getting into their own grove so I’m excited to see primagi’s true colors and what it has to offer. Especially since we’re presumably sticking with it for the next 3-4 years

One thing I’ve noticed is how the art style for the eyes are very inconsistent. Sometimes it would a much more appealing simple design but others it’s looks like it has this very strange filter on where it blends all the colors. It gives the characters a very uncanny look and I wish they’d stop.

I don’t have much other to say other then what was already mentioned by other people including the article itself but I do think you should give older series a chance. There are sometimes questionable choices that I don’t agree with but for the most part they all hold up to scrutiny for the most part.

I do thing that is an unavoidable cost of it being part of an idol franchise and being based on an idol arcade game. I do have some faith it would find more of itself as it goes on but this is a good point.

I think I got through 15 episodes of Kiratto Prichan, which I gather wasn't quite enough. I may go back to it; I'm more intrigued by PriPara, but I don't think it's been licensed. But I'm always willing to give a magical girl show (idols, superheroines, mysterious thieves, or otherwise!) a chance!

On a totally different note, it occurred to me as I was catching up in Tropical-Rouge PreCure that Waccha PriMagi is taking a distinctly different approach to one thing: it's not the (obvious) villains who are collecting energy, but rather the mascot characters who enable the girls to transform and perform in the first place. Now I'm wondering if that's foreshadowing for something that not even Myamu and her pals know about their world.

In prichan’s case I don’t blame you for not finishing it. S1 for the most part is the weakest in the entire franchise. Mostly since it doesn’t really have a strong narrative through line to get behind. It being the only season being licensed means i feel like catching up wouldn’t be worth it unless at least the second season gets picked up.
As for pripara only the 4th season is on crunchy if I remember correctly.
It escaped my mind that nothing else are available in any official capacity.Hopefully hidive manges to secure the rights some day.

As for your other point. So far they’ve mainly been holding their cards to their chests and only raising even more questions. I’m very suspicious of matsuri’s relationship with myamu. The obvious villains are very adamant about pushing them as a team and everything about them knowing each other as children seems too convenient. Like why was Jennifer so desperate to get myamu and matsuri back together back in episode 4 (I think?) and the whole wanting matsuri to win the fresh fes is also raising red flags. Why are they so worried? What’s at stake?
