The actress who plays Shiva is Rie Takahashi, not Rei. I hear a lot of people didn't like this because it skewed too far away from the manga, but I personally liked it quite a bit, even if I found some of its adaptational choices suspect. I prefer to think of it as an alternate continuity or a separate entity from the manga.

It takes a certain kind of courage to write that sentence.....

It’s an aesthetic piece. It’s best to accept it as such. There really was no feasible way to faithfully adapt this manga’s years-in-the-making storyline *and* atmospheric, compassionate soul both in this (very fitting) style and with a longer runtime.

I personally enjoyed the anime version even more. I also love the manga, but it did get a little bit tedious towards the end when the cryptic world building took the forefront. The anime cut that out. The finale does feel a bit abrupt, but apart from that it did an excellent job. And yes, it definitely is an aesthetic piece, kinda like Angel’s Egg. It’s easily one of the prettiest anime ever made.

Oh, believe me, I will. I have a high tolerance for art-house films ─ I enjoyed Belladona of Sadness, after all.

Belladonna of Sadness is one of those anime that I would not recommend even though I, myself, enjoy it.
